What Goes Into Fire Alarm Inspection? Right From Process To Checks, Here’s Everything You Need To Know

Do you have any idea about what goes on when the fire alarm system of your building is put through the inspection process? The technicians, on arrival, tend to unlock the main panel so that they get access to the account number. This will be followed by establishing contact with the monitoring station and the fire department too in order to put the entire system in the test mode. This is very important as it ensures that no false alarm goes off or resources are wasted.

Once the authorities are notified about the inspection and testing process during a particular time, the technicians will start working. There will be two technicians and they have to work together. One of them must walk up to all the locations where the fire alarms are installed so that they can inspect all the pull stations including smoke detectors, horns and strobes. The other technician stays at the main fire alarm panel so that he can observe the alarm notifications and press either silence, acknowledge or reset options for the panel for each of the devices tested.

Fire Alarm Inspection

In the process of Fire Alarm Inspection, the technicians usually start from the farthest point, that's away from the panel and work towards ensuring that they don't miss out on any devices. The entire inspection process is conducted in a number of steps, assuring complete safety of the life and property.

So here’s how a fire alarm inspection takes place:

•    Inspecting the smoke detectors

The technicians use a special tool to inspect the smoke detector devices. This is mostly an expandable pole having an aerosol can in a cup that's connected to one end containing spray imitating smoke coming from the fire and this activates the smoke detector devices. The cup is placed on the smoke detector and its sprayed for less than a second. The smoke detector then activates thereby sending a message and sound to the primary panel to take the desired action.

•    Testing the pull stations

Once all smoke detectors are tested, the technicians will start working with the pull stations. The handle needs to be pulled to activate it and when the alarm notification goes to the main panel, the key will be used to unlock the pull stations and reset the handle into its position.

•    Testing the horns and strobes

To test the horns and strobes, the technician at the fire panel will reactivate them, allowing them to make noise again and again. The other technician will sound the alarm by activating another pull station. This alarm will keep on making noise as the technician goes through each of the horns throughout the building to check them. Finally, after checking it properly, everything will be put to silence in an orderly manner, assuring that the system is working fine.

•    Checking the batteries

This is among the final steps of inspecting the fire protection system. The batteries are placed inside the alarm panel in order to tackle power outage situations. The batteries should be tested to make sure that they are going to last for at least a year. The technicians must replace the batteries if they fail during the inspection. This is an important part of the entire fire alarm inspection, which needs to be dealt with utmost care and precision.

Hiring a fire alarm inspection expert not only helps you understand the Importance of the fire alarm system but it also lets you learn about Fire sprinkler fact that helps you stay safe no matter how complex the situation is.

So yearly inspections of your fire systems shouldn’t be ignored at any cost. Keep these systems always updated in order to stay safe from sudden fire outbreaks. Encourage regular fire alarm inspection and protect your near and dear ones against any mishappenings.

The Working Of Fire Protection Systems: How They Save Lives?

Is your house or office fire protected? Every day, more than 20 fire accidents take place, resulting in irreplaceable loss of lives and property. So an effective installation of Fire Protection System will not only protect your family and employees from unexpected events but also helps to comply with the guidelines of fire law of the respective country.

Fire protection is the need of the hour and it’s important for every building to have fire protection systems so that in times of emergency, things can be controlled until the professional fire protection services arrive. These systems are crucial for any property as they are active systems, which get triggered on the fire outbreak and act quickly to put out the flames and smoke, thus limiting the amount of toxic gases to which the firefighters would be exposed to. In this regard, fire sprinkler systems have proved to be the most useful tools in the firefighting arsenal.

Here’s how these fire sprinkler systems operate:

•STEP 1 - Detects Heat:
Firstly, let’s be clear that the fire sprinkler systems don’t trigger on smoke. If this was the case, then the smoke produced while toasting the bread would have triggered the system to act. In reality, these systems are triggered by the high-intensity of heat, and not by smoke. When the fire ignites, the air above it gets heated rapidly and when this air reaches the ceiling and the sprinkler system, it triggers a chain reaction and the system invokes and starts working. It’s important to know that sprinkler heads contain a glass bulb filled with glycerin-based liquid. When the heated air at 135 to 170 degrees comes in contact with the glycerin-based liquid, it expands and activates the system.

•STEP 2- Blow Out The Fire:  Every Sprinkler System, whether it is in your residential building or commercial property, is attached to a pipe which has an adequate supply of water. As soon as the bulb lightens up, the valve opens up with high pressure of water supply, which is sprinkled directly at the fire place. This pressurized water spray immediately douses the fire.

•STEP 3- Minimizes The Water Damage: Each and every sprinkler head function individually and independently, this means whenever the fire breaks, two or three sprinkler heads are more than enough to extinguish the fire completely since it has a high pressurized spray of water. The water spillage is confined to a smaller area where actually the fire broke and hence, ensures minimum damage to the appliances or property due to water which is far more manageable than the loss caused by fire break out. The fire sprinklers extinguish the fire with about seven times less water than other firefighting tools.

How To Maintain Your Fire Protection Service Equipment In The Right Way

Modern lifestyle has made it imperative to prepare for various safety requirements and stay equipped with a range of safety accessories. Purchasing fire safety equipment is one of the primary necessities that every commercial and residential property owners must install. However, your responsibility doesn't remain confined to buying and installing the fire protection systems. The accessories like Fire Sprinkler System and extinguishers are not just meant to be dump in rooms to show that you are concerned about the safety and security of your family members and employees. They have to be serviced regularly and checked by professionals to ensure their wellbeing.

The same applies for a carbon monoxide alarm, also known as a fire alarm; you cannot just install and forget about it. It's very important that you should get them cleaned, and checked regularly professionally to ensure that they function properly during an emergency.

Here are the maintenance tips for your fire protection service equipment

Well, this entirely depends on the type of equipment you have installed. Different types of equipment require different modes of maintenance. For instance, the maintenance process for extinguishers vary depending on your location such as in the UK, your extinguisher will need three types of servicing procedures like basic, extended, and overhaul.

•    The basic servicing procedures are applicable for majority type of extinguishers as this is more like a general and regular diagnosis on the condition of the extinguisher. Weight, conditions, and pressure of the canister are checked to see if there are signs of corrosion.

•    Extended service is suitable primarily for the extinguishers comprising of pressurized water, wet chemical and foam, powder elements. This service needs to be done every 5 years. The tests done for extended services are more sophisticated. The content of extinguishers is checked for corrosion signs from inside. Additionally, a recharging agent is introduced if required.

•    Overhaul services are done mainly for CO2 based extinguishers. The canister is tested in this type of service. The test is conducted on hydraulic pressure and post test it is stamped for next ten years to go with a documentation procedure.

•    It's also a good idea to safeguard your extinguisher system by keeping them in specially designed cabinets. These cabinets help to keep the equipment safe from children so that they don't damage the canister to release pressure from the equipment accidentally.

Just like the variety of extinguishers, there is a spectrum of fire alarm systems that require varying maintenance processes.

•    For instance, alarm systems that work to detect smoke with the help of temperature plus smoke visibility must be cleaned on a regular basis to prevent dust smothering.

•    A carbon monoxide alarm including battery operated alarms must be checked for battery conditions and if required, their batteries should be changed as per manufacturer specification. Also, one must not try to repair these equipment all by themselves.

It is the responsibility of the facility manager to ensure that the Fire Sprinkler System is in smooth working condition. This will help to prevent bigger disaster in the time of need. Prevent sprinkler locks from being locked as two-thirds of accidents occur as sprinkler valves remain locked in a closed status. To ensure valve security, it's important to lock control valves in open status while supervising them electronically through fire alarm systems.

It's always better to take training classes from professional fire protection experts who help commercial business owners as well as homeowners to understand the Importance of Fire Protection System Service and the various ways to care for them and maintain them to ensure their longevity and performance in the long run.

Need for fire alarm and detection is complemented by the need to maintain them properly as this can otherwise result in malfunction of the equipment during a major emergency. So always keep your fire protection service equipment thoroughly checked.
