What Goes Into Fire Alarm Inspection? Right From Process To Checks, Here’s Everything You Need To Know

Do you have any idea about what goes on when the fire alarm system of your building is put through the inspection process? The technicians, on arrival, tend to unlock the main panel so that they get access to the account number. This will be followed by establishing contact with the monitoring station and the fire department too in order to put the entire system in the test mode. This is very important as it ensures that no false alarm goes off or resources are wasted.

Once the authorities are notified about the inspection and testing process during a particular time, the technicians will start working. There will be two technicians and they have to work together. One of them must walk up to all the locations where the fire alarms are installed so that they can inspect all the pull stations including smoke detectors, horns and strobes. The other technician stays at the main fire alarm panel so that he can observe the alarm notifications and press either silence, acknowledge or reset options for the panel for each of the devices tested.

Fire Alarm Inspection

In the process of Fire Alarm Inspection, the technicians usually start from the farthest point, that's away from the panel and work towards ensuring that they don't miss out on any devices. The entire inspection process is conducted in a number of steps, assuring complete safety of the life and property.

So here’s how a fire alarm inspection takes place:

•    Inspecting the smoke detectors

The technicians use a special tool to inspect the smoke detector devices. This is mostly an expandable pole having an aerosol can in a cup that's connected to one end containing spray imitating smoke coming from the fire and this activates the smoke detector devices. The cup is placed on the smoke detector and its sprayed for less than a second. The smoke detector then activates thereby sending a message and sound to the primary panel to take the desired action.

•    Testing the pull stations

Once all smoke detectors are tested, the technicians will start working with the pull stations. The handle needs to be pulled to activate it and when the alarm notification goes to the main panel, the key will be used to unlock the pull stations and reset the handle into its position.

•    Testing the horns and strobes

To test the horns and strobes, the technician at the fire panel will reactivate them, allowing them to make noise again and again. The other technician will sound the alarm by activating another pull station. This alarm will keep on making noise as the technician goes through each of the horns throughout the building to check them. Finally, after checking it properly, everything will be put to silence in an orderly manner, assuring that the system is working fine.

•    Checking the batteries

This is among the final steps of inspecting the fire protection system. The batteries are placed inside the alarm panel in order to tackle power outage situations. The batteries should be tested to make sure that they are going to last for at least a year. The technicians must replace the batteries if they fail during the inspection. This is an important part of the entire fire alarm inspection, which needs to be dealt with utmost care and precision.

Hiring a fire alarm inspection expert not only helps you understand the Importance of the fire alarm system but it also lets you learn about Fire sprinkler fact that helps you stay safe no matter how complex the situation is.
